Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure. It’s usual to experience some stress.
A certain amount of stress can be healthy. Stress can even be motivational. However,
if stress levels run too high for too long, it can harm mental health and well-being.

Regarding the general public, according to the Mental Health Foundation, 74% of people feel so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope. Regarding the workplace, Gallup’s State of the Workplace Report states that global stress levels are at an all-time high among people in the workplace. A substantial body of research also illustrates that c-suite leaders, senior managers and entrepreneurs are more greatly affected than their employees.

What causes Stress?

Stress can have many short-term or long-term causes, and the reasons can vary from person to person. Continued stress can significantly impact our physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being.

Some common examples of personal and professional stressors include:

  • Heavy workload
  • Health concerns
  • Political unrest
  • Public speaking
  • Being bullied at work
  • Divorce,
  • Redundancy
  • Illness
  • Financial insecurity, and
  • Emotional challenges.

What are the symptoms of stress?

  • Depression or low mood
  • Disturbance in sleep
  • Feelings of panic
  • Loss of memory
  • Agitation/Irritability
  • Over-thinking/Negative thinking
  • Palpitations
  • Excessive eating or not eating enough
  • Burnout
  • Headaches
  • Substance misuse
