Depression is a serious condition that affects mood. Most people feel low from time-to-time, however, 1 in 4 people currently experience in the UK.

It affects people in several ways, impacting thoughts, feelings and relationships with others. Thankfully, it is very treatable, and therapy can be successful in helping people through.

Depressive symptoms can be mild, whereas feeling low or depressed can be a natural reaction to challenging or adverse life events. If you are experiencing depression, it may also be a due reaction to any number of circumstances, such as the breakdown of a relationship work-related stress, trauma or illicit drug or alcohol misuse, to name but a few. Depression can also be something you experience through bereavement. However, depression is distinct from grief, in grief usually lessens over time.

If you’re feeling low or depressed, you may also experience one or more of some of the signs below:

  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Frequent worrying
  • Feeling numb
  • Tearfulness
  • Irritability
  • Difficulties making decisions
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Poor concentration
  • Excessive eating or not eating enough
  • Lack of motivation
  • Withdrawing from friends and family
  • Negative outlook
  • Uncontrollable emotions
  • Tiredness and Lethargy
  • Loss of interest in sex

Alternately, more severe depression can see symptoms develop as a result of biochemical imbalances in the body, that can cause short or long-term depression. In severe cases, a qualified health professional may provide a formal clinical diagnosis of depression. Some people with severe depression, may experience suicidal feelings or have suicidal thoughts.
